The Duchess said in an interview with National Public Radio (NPR) Samantha Balban, “Growing up, I very much remember what it felt like to see myself not being represented.”
“So any child or any family can open this book and see themselves in it, whether it’s glasses or freckles or a different body shape or a different ethnicity or religion,” Meghan said.
While the book opens and ends with a depiction of Meghan’s family, the entire story depicts a diverse range of fathers and sons.
Earlier this year Meghan and her husband Prince Harry sparked a heated conversation about racism, the British tabloid press and the royal family after their bombastic interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Meghan’s book was published last month. It is inspired by Prince Harry and his son Archie Harrison, and is about the relationship between fathers and sons depicted in quiet moments spent on the bench.
Meghan said that “particularly in this past year,” against the backdrop of a global pandemic, that “many of us have realized just how much calmness goes.”
“So, in this story, I’m looking at this love between my husband and our son and imagining what it will be like because they’ll have more shared moments as our son grows up,” she said.
“From scratching a knee to breaking a heart, whatever it is, they always reset on this bench and have this moment to bond,” Meghan said.
The book is derived from a poem and bench that Meghan gave to Harry for his first Father’s Day. The interview, which aired on Sunday, marks the couple’s second Father’s Day.
Her daughter was named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen, whose family surname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her late grandmother.
Meghan said award-winning illustrator Christian Robinson has included small details in the book about who will raise her son Archie, and the late Princess Diana in a subtle way.
Meghan said, “I think you can find those sweet little moments that we’ve put in there — from my favorite flower, even my husband’s mom’s favorite flower, forget me.”
“We wanted to make sure they were covered. There are so many special details and love in this book,” he said.
Harry and Meghan were married three years ago in a lavish wedding at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, England.
They stepped down from their roles as senior working royals last year, relinquished their HRH titles, and now resides in Santa Barbara, California.
