Occupying Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, pop culture’s most famous faces have descended upon The Metropolitan Museum of Art to celebrate the fashion industry’s party of the year: The Met Gala.
Usually held on the first Monday in May (it was postponed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic), the star-studded annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute marked the opening of the museum’s banner fashion exhibition Key – this year, “In America: A Dictionary of Fashion”.
Open to the public on September 18, this is the first part of a two-part exhibition that explores how the narrative and aesthetics of American fashion have evolved from the 1940s through nearly 100 historical and contemporary ensembles .
But tonight, the focus is on the Met’s stages, where A-list actors, supermodels, TV drag queens and athletes will be walking cream Carpet in her finest designer outfit.
This year’s co-chairs reflect not only the diversity of the invite list, but also its collective star power: Timothy Chalameta
, naomi osaka, Billy Elisho
and inaugural poet Amanda Gorman presiding over the ceremony with honorary chairs Anna Wintour
, Tom Ford and Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram.
Before the event, Wintour told CNN Style
via email that in 2021 American fashion “has become a patchwork, reflecting the world we are all living in, as seen through many different lenses.”

Adding to that patchwork, the editor-in-chief of Vogue ditched her usual Chanel and wore a floral Oscar de la Renta gown—a tribute to the late designer, who was a close friend and ardent gardener.
Meanwhile, Gorman told CNN Style that American fashion was “diverse, vibrant, beautiful and conflicting.” Stepping up, she said, “I think American fashion really is at the crossroads of the world.”
The poet wore an embellished indigo gown by Vera Wang, with a jeweled laurel crown and a book-shaped clutch, embellished with the words “I’m tired of myself”—all references to the Statue of Liberty.
