Rita Moreno defends Lin-Manuel Miranda over ‘In the Heights’ colorism controversy

The actress appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Tuesday night and she talked about Controversy Around Miranda’s new film “In the Heights”, she was criticized for featuring darker Afro-Latinos in the background and dance scenes, but not in the lead roles.

“It’s like you can never do right,” Moreno said. “This is the guy who really brought Latino-ness and Puerto Rican-ness to America. I couldn’t do that. I mean, I’d love to say I did, but I couldn’t. Lin-Manuel did it.” I’m really lonely, and I’m thrilled to the pieces, and I’m proud that they produced my documentary.”

Her new documentary is titled, “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decides to Go for It.”

Moreno continued, “I’m just saying, can’t you wait a while and leave it alone? There are a lot of people who are Puerto Ricano, who are also from Guatemala, who are dark and who are also fair. . We are all colors in Puerto Rico.”

“In the Heights,” a musical about a vibrant and diverse Latinx community in New York City, was released in theaters earlier this month.

Manuel recently responded to criticism on social media, writing, “In trying to paint a mosaic of this community, we fall short. I’m really sorry.”
