Tom Perez on Democrats’ Mistakes and Why Iowa Shouldn’t Go First
The thing about this election cycle is that it is really regrettable that we had a record turnout. And we should celebrate on a bipartisan basis, because we have done really well. We won the presidency. We have a house. We have the Senate. And the Republicans won several key races. It is undisputed. He won several Senate seats. He won several Congress seats. And they won because so many of their people came out. And instead, Donald Trump and the far right invested in the fantasy that there was some sort of mass voter fraud, which is simply wrong.
The reality is that we have won a series of really important races. And he won many down-ballot races. They are facts of 2020. And that’s why we’re drilling deeper to answer the question of how we did well Mark kelly And Joe Biden in Arizona And it’s not good either Some races in the State House and State Senate. Really important questions. This was certainly not for lack of investment. And that’s why we want to understand what else we have to do.
Why was Latino support for Democrats in 2020 is so soft Did elections take place four years later and earlier than Trump in 2016?
Do we need to do more with Latino voters? Absolutely. And I am very committed to it. The party has done more than we have done. But again, every cycle, we have to build on what we did earlier. And that’s exactly what we will do. Misinformation campaigns in South Florida were very real. And they included both domestic and foreign artists.
And the appeal of socialism in South Florida was more successful. He argued the same socialism in Arizona. But they fell. And they fell flat, in no small measure, because we had a very aggressive and long-held infrastructure in Arizona that enabled us to counter it.
Will the elections of 2022 and 2024 be a referendum on President Biden’s handling of the epidemic and economy?
They always ask the same question that the voters are going to ask themselves. “Am I better than two years ago? Am I seeing results that are making my life better? “As they are able to return to normalcy, whatever the normal situation is going to look like for Kovid, I think they will appreciate the leadership of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris during this crisis.”
Should iowa and new hampshire Be the first in the presidential nomination processThe
Which would be for the rules and bye-laws committee of the DNC.
I know. But what does private citizen Tom Perez think?
A diverse state or states should be first. The difference between going first and going third is really important. We know the importance of speed in Democratic primaries.
I will try once more. Can you make a case to defend Iowa and New Hampshire?
The status quo is clearly unacceptable. Just to say, “Let’s just keep doing this because it’s that we’ve always done it,” well, Iowa began as an early caucus state, I believe in 1972. The world has changed a lot since 1972 to 2020 and 2024. And so the notion that we need to do it because it is that we have always done it is an insufficient justification to go back again.
This is the Democratic Party of 2020. How we were in 1972 is different from the Democratic Party. And we need to reflect that change. And so I believe that the status quo is not going to remain.
How far are you thinking about the road Running for governor of marylandThe
I am seriously considering a run for governor in Maryland.
We need a governor who can truly build a strong relationship with the Biden administration, building strong relationships with every single jurisdiction in Maryland.
Marylanders are just like everyone else. We want the end of this epidemic. We want to bring children back to school. We want to put people back to work. The epidemic has touched the color of women and communities in Maryland to a great extent. And I have had the privilege of working with local government and non-profit faith communities and state government.
So I am currently listening. I am on a listening tour in Maryland. And I think we need leadership, in fact, with a bold vision of inclusion and opportunity because zip codes should not determine destiny in any community across America.
is Larry hogan Been a good governor for Maryland?
I appreciate the fact that Larry Hogan Important things said about Donald Trump. I appreciate What I really need, I think, are leaders in Maryland who will read the details of governance. Epidemic rollout, the vaccination process in Maryland is nothing short of chaotic. We have unemployment insurance crisis, people have been waiting for months and months to get their unemployment benefits. This is just a failure of leadership at the state level.
I did not hear yes or no on Hogan.
I appreciated that Tried to get some test from south korea. But then it turned out Test didn’t work. And he covered it. And there are always moments where mistakes happen. And good leaders are afraid of making those mistakes. But he tried to sweep it under the carpet.
Again, it’s great to see a governor who criticizes Donald Trump. But we need governors who make hell more than just criticism.
What are you doing to accelerate vaccine delivery and reopen schools?
I would talk on the phone every day with county officials: “What do you want? What don’t you have what do you have? What can we do? “I am working tirelessly to tell my colleagues in the federal government:” Here we need. What’s going on over here. “I will have a war room and again, every single day, will say:” You value what you measure. You measure what you value. What are we doing? “
Donald Trump is partially blamed for this. She was a disaster. But you look at other states – other states are able to work around that and are doing better. Our vaccination rates do not compare well. We are the richest state in the United States – Maryland – but we have many people who are looking outward.
You said that good leaders admit their mistakes. What are the biggest mistakes you made in DNC?
I wish we could have won more elections. And so I look back at what we did and some races we didn’t win. I was really disappointed in January and early February of 2017, because Donald Trump was in power and he was issuing all kinds of executive functions that were turning life upside down for so many people. It was in the midst of the DNC race because the election was not scheduled until the end of February. So we got a late start. And I think it was a mistake.
It was disappointing to see February 27, a month in administration, and I am showing up at work for the first time. So I think we have to be very mindful. And if there are times in the future where we are in a similar situation where we lost the White House, we better make sure we start early because I had to play too many catch-ups. And that was a mistake.
